Short and Erotic...

Here's an a short erotic story I recently wrote:

He watched her sleep.  She was so still; so peaceful.  He watched her breathing deepen and her chest rise and fall with every exhaled breath.  He couldn't take his eyes off of her.  And then the most unexpected thing happened… she shifted in her sleep and the sheet drifted downward, just a little.  His breath caught.  She was naked.  He could see the tops of her breasts uncovered and he waited… it was a gift when she shifted again and the sheet inched down further… her breasts were exposed now, her nipples taut and pink from the sweet friction of the sheet gliding over them, beckoning him to just bend down and touch them or open his mouth and taste them… and then she thrashed in her sleep from the appearance of a dream and she kicked off the sheet completely.

He stood there, breathless, rooted to the spot, his eyes sweeping downward until they reached the opening between her legs… her pubic hair was minimal but matted and damp from sweat and she shifted again, her legs falling open as if asking him to take her… take me now… fuck me.

His hands moved to his belt and without taking his eyes from her, he quickly unbuckled it, unzipped his pants and let them drop to the floor.  His boxers followed and he was naked and ready for her… except he just wanted to watch her for one more scintillating second.

She sighed in her sleep, a soft, sensual sound and her lips parted sensually… that was it, he couldn't wait any longer, he had to have her.

He slowly slipped inside her.  “Jason…” she breathed, half asleep.  He moved—slowly but purposefully, his mouth at the pulse in neck, pressing a deep kiss there as he plunged into her again, more urgent this time.

“Jason, my God, Jason…” Her eyes flew open, her lips parting and a soft breath escaping them.

“Shush,” he whispered, silencing her with a kiss, a deep, passionate kiss that stole her breath.

And then he moved again and didn't stop… his strokes were deep and powerful now and they were both moaning.

“Yes, Jason, yes,” she panted between moans.  “Make me come.  Yes, just like that.”

He fucked her hard, knowing he was close but holding back until she could come.

“Come for me now, baby,” he rasped, his voice deep and demanding.

“Oh my God!” she cried as she arched up and exploded into a million pieces.  He felt her gripping him and he couldn't hold back, he moaned and let go, spurting inside him.

He collapsed on top of her and then kissed her.

“Good morning, baby.”

Sexy can be sexy except when it's not

I just read a blog post on Right Angle about writing sex scenes and it made me think.  They mentioned that writing a bad sex scene is easy but a good one is hard (no pun intended!) and I tend to agree.  I shy away from anything sounding too bodice-ripperish when I write sex scenes.  I won't use man root, rod, manhood, globes, mound, sex, etc. for the body parts and try to stay away from throb (I use that sparingly), pulse (I have used that some), cum, ejaculate, etc.  I use passion/passionately, urgent and lust sparingly, leaning instead towards ardor, ardent, fervor, etc.which I think are more elegant and less used.  I use my Thesaurus a lot when writing, but especially when writing sex scenes.  You want to be somewhat imaginative without being laughed at or scoffed at.  I have used organ and member in my latest book series though just because I'm writing without using the usual "cock" and "dick" and have to get creative.  I've also used "length" and "girth", but mostly I use "erection".  The woman's anatomy in these book series is referred to as her opening or occasionally "vagina".  I use that sparingly since it's too clinical.  I also rarely use "penis" but it will appear if needed.

I am guilty of using fuck a lot just because it's sexy.  Making love is a little more wimpy and connotates love over passion but it's still worthy of inclusion depending upon the context.  "I'm going to throw you down on the bed and make love to you" is less sexy than "I'm going to throw you down on the bed and fuck you." You can even add "senseless" for further effect which I have done.  You could say, though, "Let's go inside and make love."  That sounds a bit more romantic.  It's all about context, content and what you want conveyed.

Fans of my first book in The Eyes Trilogy, "The Eyes of Alexander" will be happy to know that I'm currently formatting the second book in the series, "The Eyes of Aubriana".  Here's the quote at the beginning of the book:

I'm hoping for a late August release!

So the sales of my book have increased infinitely the past few days and I'm so grateful.  If it's any of you buying it, thanks so much! The highest honor an author can receive is fans buying their book.  I've updated my cover.  Hope you like it.  The Eyes of Alexander - Kindle Edition

Shakespeare Quote

I'm going to try to blog every day... Try being the operative word but sometimes the posts will be short. Today I will leave you with a quote from Shakespeare that I put in the beginning of "The Eyes of Alexander" because it was so appropos... "The Eyes are the Window to the Soul..." Ain't that the truth!

Summer Sunshine!

Sorry I've been absent for a while.  Been busy with life but I'm still writing and I still love it.  And I'm still editing "The Eyes of Aubriana".  I'm more than halfway through my second draft with third and fourth drafts to come.  It's a process but one I'm willing to muddle through.

I've been promoting "The Eyes of Alexander" every day on Twitter through Bitly.  I think it helps since I've been getting a few sales.  Here's the link in case anyone here wants to purchase the first book of the series: http://bit.ly/TheEyesofAlexander.

Been selling on ebay and Amazon.  Thought I'd share those links, too.  www.battenrougebargains.com and http://www.amazon.com/gp/aag/main?ie=UTF8&seller=A17A42F9Q1BPKA.

I'm thrilled that summer is here! It's my favorite season.  I get inspired by sunshine and I'm walking on it, too! Like The Corrs song, "In the heat of summer sunshine, I kiss you..."

Books & Buttons

"...and my books are like friends that I come back to at night." ~Cynthia Batten

I just finished watching for the second time, "The Curious Life of Benjamin Button".  It's one of the few academy award movies that I loved.  I was enthralled from beginning to end both times I've watched it.  It reminded me of "Forrest Gump" in the sense that Benjamin was a man struggling with an ailment and he had struggles in his life, too.  But he also had joys and those are what he tended to focus on.  I loved watching the movie from Benjamin's eyes and the way he found joy in almost everything in life.  It made me want to be more optimistic and more appreciative of things I take for granted or don't give credit to.  And although the ending was sad, it was still triumphant because for the most part, he lived how he wanted to live despite the hand life had dealt him.

Anyway, after watching that movie, I turned off the television like I do most nights and got on the computer and the above quote was born out of feeling the sense of coming home to my writing.  I can once again meet my characters on the page and mold and shape them however I want.  They are my friends and I'm happy to share them, but right now, I must get back to them.  :)

Meet My Characters

So I just read a blog post about the author's book's main characters and thought I'd share my main characters, too.

Let's start with my first book, "Fire In The Mix":

Veronica Hunter
This is a picture of a Victoria's Secret model but this is how I pictured Veronica.  Veronica is fiery, outspoken and independent, but she's also somewhat innocent, damaged and lost.  Deep down all she wants is to feel worthy and be loved.  She hides behind the wall of hurt she's created because of a man she'd deeply admired and respected crushed her dreams, but most importantly, her heart.  She won't give in, even when the same man waltzes back into her life as if nothing happened.  She's stubborn and resolute that he won't stomp on her heart again.  But with time, Gabriel Savage opens her eyes that he's changed and she can finally let the ice walls melt and her hardened heart thaw so she could finally obtain what she's always wanted.

Gabriel Savage
This is my Gabriel or I wish he was! Another photo I "borrowed" from the internet.  Gabriel is a bad boy rock star. Women adored him and threw themselves at him.  He was used to getting what he wanted.  He took and didn't care who got hurt.  It was his life--music, women and partying and it worked for him--for a while.  It had taken him to the top--his band and music were world renown, but there was always something missing and he didn't know what it was until he ran into Veronica Hunter again.  He couldn't remember her or their past at first--there had been so many women over the years--but when it came back to him, he knew that he'd have to atone for his past sins so he could have a future; a future with her.  If she'd only forgive him.

There are some other characters--Veronica's ex-husband, Toby and her ex-best friend, Darcy and current best friend, Maryann and Gabriel's best friends, Mitch and Jesse, but I'll let you read the book to find out about them.

Fire In the Mix can be purchased on Amazon here:  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AQJ6XYC

Moving on to my current romance novel, "The Eyes of Alexander"

Aubrey/Aubriana Windsor
The first photo on the left is a photo of Elizabeth Harnois from CSI and the photo on the right is a stock photo I'm using for my book cover.  I picture Aubrey to look like Elizabeth, but have the hair style and color of the model on the right. Aubrey is naive, innocent and gullible but is also independent, headstrong and not afraid to speak her mind. She's not ready for a relationship yet because she's concentrating on obtaining a career in the publishing field. But that all changes when she develops an overwhelming attraction to the man who interviews her; the wealthy owner and soon to be boss, Alexander/Xander Ayes.  Working for him, she's suddenly faced with dealing with a man who's complicated and cruel at times, and she won't let him get away with it.  It's an ultimate struggle between professional and passion, respect and desire, changing his harsh ways and learning how to grow up, and suddenly having a life she'd never dreamed was possible.

Alexander/Xander Ayes
This is the beautiful Australian model, David Gandy aka Alexander/Xander Ayes.  I wrote my character around this photo.  This is Xander to the tee. He's beautiful yet complicated, a man ravaged by his past, changed into a sometimes heartless, but brilliant boss and a insecure and damaged man by his cruel, abusive father.  He'd worked hard to become the successful businessman he was and he had no problem getting women, but he kept an arms-length from them, not wanting a marriage like his parents.  But when Aubrey Windsor exploded into his life, everything he'd known for a certainty was now uncertain.  She changed everything.  Her beauty, her unfiltered mouth--she wouldn't allow him to bully her like he did without everyone else--and the way she made him want to change, to be a better man for her. Her love transformed him into everything he'd never thought he could be.

I won't share on Aubrey's best friend and sister, Natalie, Xander's best friend, Max or anyone else because again, you need to read the book.

KDP issue

Did I mention that KDP Select (Amazon's Kindle Publication ebook division) forced me to remove my book from Smashwords and their distributors which includes Barnes & Noble and Sony? They don't want me to sell my book on any other ebook venues.  It's frustrating, especially since I sold 29 downloads of my first book, "Fire In The Mix" on Smashwords and I know I'd have at least that many sales for "The Eyes of Alexander". But I didn't want Amazon to pull my book since they are the main draw for my sales so I did as they asked. I'm hoping they will change that rule in the future.  What are they afraid of? Healthy competition? They are the big guys, garnering the lion's share of sales, they shouldn't be afraid of the "little guys".  At least I had my book on Smashwords for a short time.  Who knows? Maybe that made a difference.

Book update

Still working on book promotion.  Sales have slowed somewhat through Amazon, but they're still coming and the reviews have been great.  It's such a rewarding feeling to know all my hard work paid off and that despite my doubts, people actually like my book! Working on editing Book #2 and currently rewriting Chapter 21.  It's been fun but tedious.  I'm hoping to release this book within the next three months.

Review Number 5...

Another great review.  *giddy*!  Thanks, Donna!
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book 4.5 stars April 15, 2014

I read this in a matter of no time, I could not put down. If you can handle issue of abuse and when I say it, it was emotional and physical and they way Mrs. Batten wrote this you could feel all emotions and feelings coming from the page, I couldn't help but cry too. Alexander is so missed up by abuse( I will not spoil it so read it) and Aubrey has her own strengths and I like that she wasn't made out to be weak. The sparks fly between them and you could almost feel it. There are something's I don't like, but I hope that in the next book I will get my answers The Eyes of Aubriana and then there is one more. I love how Mrs. Batten did not leave us with a cliff hanger, that makes all of us cringe till the next one, but thankfully she did right be us readers. Thanks Mrs. Batten for a great book and can't wait till next one.

"Thank God it's Friday night and I just got paid" . . .

I got my first Amazon payment for sales from my book "The Eyes of Alexander".  It was small, but exciting nonetheless.  It's thrilling to know I'm an author and I get paid for doing what I love.  I need to keep going, promote, promote, promote! What do you guys think of my book covers? Feel free to chime in with comments.  Here's an excerpt from the second book from The Eyes Trilogy, "The Eyes of Aubriana":  "I hadn’t seen Xander Ayes in six weeks.  Six weeks of hell.  Six weeks of devastation.  Six weeks of me not being me.  For without Xander, I was nothing.  I may as well be dead.  There were times I thought I was dead.  Everything was a blur.  Night and day were the same; time stood still.  I was stuck in a universe where nothing moved forward and nothing progressed.  I was just there, in purgatory, waiting to die, except—something inside of me kept me alive.  Something wanted me to live; needed me to live even though I didn’t want to.  The feeling was unrelenting; I had to keep going for some reason; keep eating, keep drinking, keep living.  I didn’t know why or how or what, I just had to."

Life of an author...

Hi guys... I haven't forgotten you... I've been busy promoting my book, working as an office manager and selling on ebay and proofreading/editing my second book, "The Eyes of Aubriana."  I was bummed when I got the email the other day from Amazon telling me I had to quit selling on Smashwords because it's a conflict of interest.  I guess their contract states that you can't sell online with anyone but them.  Well, that's too bad, but at least I know the majority of my book sales have come from them so I guess I'm okay with it. I still only have three reviews on Amazon and one on Goodreads.  I wish I had more so I can find out what people really think of my book.  If anyone wants to comment here, I'd be more thrilled to hear them.

Barnes & Noble news...

"The Eyes of Alexander" by Cynthia Batten is now for sale at Barnes & Noble!

Another excerpt from "The Eyes of Alexander"...

"“That’s for you,” he said, nodding towards the bag.
I picked it up and peeked inside.  It was my prescription! I flushed crimson.
“Now before you get mad at me, remember that I did this for both of us,” Xander explained in an attempt to obviate my wrath.  “The sooner you get started on those, the sooner we can stop using those damn condoms.”
Had the man no shame? I mean, Lucas and Bennett could probably hear him.  Clearly, he didn't feel the need to be discreet about our sex life.  Well, two can play at that game.
“Lucas, thanks so much for getting my birth control pills!” I called out boldly, enjoying the shocked stares from all three men.  Well, I couldn’t see Lucas’ face, but I saw the backs of his ears redden and Bennett briefly turn to gape at me.  I smugly turned to see Xander’s shocked face.
“You don’t need to respond to my audacious girlfriend, Lucas,” Xander called out and then turned to me.  “As ever, Miss Windsor, you never cease to surprise me.”  He kissed my cheek proudly.
I was proud of myself, too.  My victory swallowed up my embarrassment and I did a pom-poms cheer in my head.  You go girl!"

Confusing review

Here's a review I received on Goodreads.  I appreciate all reviews, good, mediocre or bad, but this one confused me.  What does "like this but wanted to it more" mean? I'm assuming she left out a word or two and I have no idea what "too much 50" means.

Liked this but wanted to it more. Not poorly written. Too much 50, too much that seemed really a logic jump where it brought me out of the story to think to myself wow that's really not how real life works. A cute little story though.

Awesome review of The Eyes of Alexander!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar, January 5, 2014
This review is from: The Eyes of Alexander (The Eyes series) (Kindle Edition)
I've been searching for quite sometime for a novel to intrigue me from beginning to end. Lately, everything seems unoriginal and contrived. However, The Eyes of Alexander had me engrossed to the final chapter. Alexander and Aubrey's relationship is conflicted early on when they feel an instant and mutual attraction to one another, but have to learn to work together as well. Nothing stays professional too long as stronger feelings develop between the two and a dangerous stalker threatens their safety. Alexander is a supreme alpha male who reeks authority yet has a vulnerable and broken side he's struggled through since childhood. Aubrey is a bit weary and intimidated by Alex's controlling nature, but learns eventually to be strong willed when needed. The chemistry between the two sizzles right off the pages and leaves you wanting for more. This is the beginning of a trilogy you won't want to miss out on!

The other review wasn't as "stellar" and they said something about passing over the "gross parts".  Hmm, not sure what that means since there aren't any gross parts, at least there's nothing gory in this book.  Anyway, good or bad, I'll take the reviews.  They can only help me become a better writer!

Excerpts from "The Eyes of Alexander":

"I’m not like him, Aubriana.”
What? “What do you mean?”
“That’s what you were thinking, right? That you need to be wary of me, too?”
What could I say? I had no words.  He had stolen mine.
Bending down, he whispered hotly in my ear, “You deserve better than that jerk.  You deserve to be cherished; I would cherish you."
* * *
As I spun around, the world spun, too; at least my world.  Breathtaking described the man smirking at me.  Surely Mr. Ayes just finished a photo shoot for the cover of GQ.  Dazzling blue eyes were a brilliant contrast against what appeared to be a navy Prada or Gucci navy wool suit, stark white dress shirt and cobalt blue horizontally-striped tie, and his dark head of hair ruffled into a sexy mess made my fingers envious they hadn't been the cause.
* * *
When we did meet face-to-face, it was five minutes past the eight o'clock sharp start time.  Ava was sitting behind my desk staring at the computer screen while Mr. Intimidating Ayes leaned against its front casually, arms crossed, legs outstretched, acrimonious demeanor.  Of course he was pissed.  Although expected, it was still not easy to accept, especially from a man who was too hot for my own good.  He was sex wrapped in a suit and my body knew it.
* * *
Turning the key in the lock, we stepped inside to the sounds of sex coming from Natalie’s bedroom.  Oh no! Oh shit! Natalie!
Eyes wide, a heated blush quickly spreading over my face and body, I glanced up at Xander.  He was clearly amused.  “I take it you have company.”
“Oh God, my sister.  I’m guessing she reunited with her ex-boyfriend.  Do you want to go or should I interrupt them?”
“This is what I want,” Xander rasped.  Dropping the bag to the floor, his hands caught my face, pulling my mouth to his, an eager tongue tangling with mine in an explosive kiss.
He was finally kissing me! Nirvana was the name of a band and my state of mind as Xander's kiss rocked my world.
We separated to garner air, breathless and wanting more, or at least I did—lots more.
“I’m sorry,” he interrupted.  “I just heard them and . . . it made me want to kiss you.”

Fire In The Mix on sale on Amazon and Createspace

Fire In The Mix
by Cynthia Morgan

Will her icy resistance deter his hot pursuit?

PAST:  Fire Meets Ice

He looked familiar, but why? Gabriel Savage exploded onto the scene taking lingerie manager/wannabe clothing designer Veronica Hunter by surprise. The rogue who had claimed her innocence and forever changed her life was back as the same sexy, charming, egotistical rock star. Except—something about him was different. Could he have changed?

PRESENT:  Slow Burn
